The new LaserWriter 8 drivers (from version 8.2) cannot generate a valid LaserWriter 8 Preferences file without an attached printer. If you do have a printer this is not a problem. However, if you don't have a printer, and you want to use the LaserWriter 8 driver to generate PostScript¿ files then there is a problem.
I have generated this LaserWriter 8 Prefs file using a Macintosh which is attached to a network and has access to an Apple Personal LaserWriter laser printer. While it is generally not a good idea to take a preferences file from one computer and use it on another I have not encountered any problems with this approach.
Ok, I think it might be wise to put in a disclaimer, so here it is:

Installation Guide
If you already have a LaserWriter 8 driver installed you might want to make a backup of your driver and the preferences file (just to be on the safe side).
Install the LaserWriter 8.2.2 driver as per the Apple instructions.
Go into the Chooser and select LaserWriter 8. AppleTalk will be switched on for you and you'll be greeted with a dialog saying that AppleTalk is required for the LaserWriter 8. This is only true if you are going to print to a printer. Now switch AppleTalk OFF again and click OK on the two dialogs that pop up afterwards. Close the Chooser.
If you now go back to the Finder and chose Page Setup, you'll get a warning dialog saying that the LaserWriter 8 preferences is missing or damaged.
Now delete the LaserWriter 8 Prefs file in the System Folder:Preferences folder, and replace it with the one here. You should now be able to choose Page Setup and get the page setup dialog as normal. You shouldn't have any problems from now on, but it's probably worth keeping a spare copy of the LaserWriter 8 Prefs file as a backup just in case it gets corrupted somehow.
Anyway, now you're ready to generate PostScript¿ output to your hearts content!
